Cos’è il thanaka?
Il Thanaka (သနပ်ခါး) è una crema cosmetica di colore giallo-bianco, ottenuta dalla corteccia di alcuni alberi della famiglia delle Rutaceae, come Murraya spp. e Limonia acidissima.
È tipica della Birmania, dove le donne, ed occasionalmente gli uomini, lo applicano sul viso e sulle braccia. Principale scopo del thanaka è di rinfrescare, profumare e purificare la pelle, in maniera naturale e per un lungo periodo.
Thanaka (သနပ်ခါး) is a yellow-white cosmetic cream, obtained from the bark of some trees of the Rutaceae family, such as Murraya spp. and very acidic Limonia. It is typical of Burma, where women, and occasionally men, apply it to the face and arms. The main purpose of thanaka is to refresh, perfume and purify the skin, naturally and for a long time.
L’abitudine locale è di imbrattarsi il viso con un impasto chiaro, un cosmetico naturale molto apprezzato in Myanmar ma anche nei paesi limitrofi, come Laos e Thailandia .Una crema cosmetica gialla, fatta dalla corteccia di alcuni alberi, che tutte le donne e le ragazze birmane mettono sulle gote. Ha un ottimo profumo di sandalo, è famosa per essere un naturale protettore dai raggi UV e per avere effetti antiossidanti e antinfiammatori. Viene ricavata dalla triturazione di un legno simile, come consistenza e odore, al sandalo; questo prodotto naturale è venduto in ogni mercatino del paese e usato principalmente da donne e bambini per progeggere il viso (e le braccia) dal sole o per difendere la pelle dagli insetti. La corteccia della pianta viene macinata finemente insieme a poca acqua su una pietra circolare finché si ottiene una pasta omogenea; questo impasto viene applicato con una spatolina sulle parti interessate, per lo più il viso e le braccia, ed asciugato rapidamente grazie all’azione di un ventaglio. In questo modo la pasta s’indurisce e resta naturalmente appiccicata alla cute, garantendone maggiore durata ed efficacia.

È un legno delicato dal peso inconsistente, molto poroso, che si trova in vendita nei mercatini locali, in piccoli pezzetti. Le donne birmane lo inumidiscono da un lato e lo strofinano su una pietra, fino a ottenere un fluido giallastro che si applica direttamente sulla pelle.

Ecco perché viene distribuito sul viso e molto spesso sulle braccia di donne e bambini. I bambini sono infatti i soggetti a maggior rischio dei raggi ultravioletti e devono essere sempre ricoperti da questa poltiglia dai “poteri magici”!
