Infatti è di origine francese e si diffuse nella moda maschile in Francia e poi successivamente in tutta Europa. prima era utilizzato esclusivamente dagli uomini come accessorio di stile, poi, anche la donna nel 1920 e 1930 ha cominciato ad utilizzare un abbigliamento ispirato a quello maschile, indossandolo, come le stelle del cinema Marlene Dietrich e Katharine Hepburn.
