Poco tempo fa mi è capitato di imbattermi in un documentario che parlava della cultura Rastafari in Giamaica, delle radici della sua nascita, il suo credo che moltissime persone seguono in tutto il mondo. Rastafari non è una religione, ma un vero e proprio stile di vita. In tanti magari minimizziamo il movimento rasta associandolo solo a Bob Marley e ai giamaicani con lunghissimi capelli dred, ma è molto di più di tutto questo! Rastafari non è una religione ma uno stile di vita.
Recently I came across a documentary that spoke of Rastafari culture in Jamaica, the roots of his birth, his belief that many people follow all over the world. Rastafari is not a religion, but a real lifestyle. In many, perhaps we minimize the rasta movement by associating it only to Bob Marley and Jamaicans with very long hair dred, but it is much more than all this! Rastafari is not a religion but a way of life.
I simboli del movimento Rastafariano sono il rosso vivo, il verde, l’oro e l’immagine del Leone di Giuda che si può trovare in ogni angolo del paese. I dreadlocks, che una volta erano considerati qualcosa di sporco, sono diventati un’acconciatura alla moda anche al di fuori della comunità Rasta. Alla base della vita Rastafari c’è l’insegnamento della Bibbia e la relazione pacifica tra l’uomo e l’ambiente. La maggior parte di loro sono vegetariani, non bevono alcolici né mangiano carne di maiale. La “ganja” (marijuana) è considerata un’erba sacra. Fumarla infatti è considerato un mezzo per acquisire saggezza e comunicare con Dio.
“Ras” o “Dread” è il modo in cui la maggior parte dei giamaicani si salutano, “Imperatrice” o “Sistren” invece per le donne.

The symbols of the Rastafarian movement are bright red, green, gold and the image of the Lion of Juda that can be found in every corner of the country. The dreadlocks, which were once considered something dirty, have become a fashionable hairstyle even outside the Rasta community. At the basis of Rastafari’s life is the teaching of the Bible and the peaceful relationship between man and the environment. Most of them are vegetarians, do not drink alcohol or eat pork. The “ganja” (marijuana) is considered a sacred herb. In fact, smoking is considered a means of acquiring wisdom and communicating with God.
Le donne Rastafari indossano quasi esclusivamente le gonne. Questa scelta rappresenta un forte legame verso l’universo femminile, per allontanarsi dalla figura maschile. Le donne Rasta possono indossare qualsiasi colore tranne il rosa, il blu e il viola. Largo spazio al rosso, il giallo, il verde, il bianco e il nero. Generalmente si avvolgono il capo con foulard stampati multicolori per coprire la radice dei dreadlocks, perché questa è ritenuta la parte energetica più importante da cui fluisce tutta l’energia del corpo.
Rastafarian women wear almost exclusively skirts. This choice represents a strong link to the female universe, to get away from the male figure. Rasta women can wear any color except pink, blue and purple. Large space to red, yellow, green, white and black. Generally the head is wrapped with multicolored printed headscarf to cover the root of the dreadlocks, because this is considered the most important energetic part from which all the energy of the body flows.
Usano i colori con accostamenti forti e dirompenti, per esprimere un messaggio di allegria, voglia di vivere, speranza. Le stampe utilizzate per i vestiti ed i foulard per raccogliere i capelli, richiamano quelle africane, astratte o con elementi naturali, sempre onnipresenti nella cultura rastafari. Il contrasto tra queste cromie e la pelle d’ebano delle donne rastafari è sublime. Anche gli accessori richiamano fortemente i dettami di questo stile, bracciali in tessuto o fettuccia multicolore, grossi anelli in metallo o orecchini pendenti. Il volto delle donne rastafari è sensuale e giocoso, la donna rastafari è una vera queen!
They use colors with strong and disruptive combinations, to express a message of joy, desire to live, hope. The prints used for clothes and headscarves to gather hair, recall those African, abstract or natural elements, always ubiquitous in rastafarian culture. The contrast between these colors and the ebony skin of rastafarian women is sublime. Even the accessories strongly recall the dictates of this style, bracelets in fabric or multicolored ribbon, large metal rings or dangling earrings. The face of rastafarian women is sensual and playful, the rastafarian woman is a real queen!
La mia opinione, riguardo le donne occidentali che hanno abbracciato questo credo e tutto lo stile di vita rastafari, è molto personale … tutti sono liberi di sposare una cultura ed i suoi usi e costumi, ma guardando i volti di queste donne giamaicane converrete con me che Rastafari è Giamaica!!! E voi cosa ne pensate?
My opinion, regarding the Western women who have embraced this creed and all the rastafarian lifestyle, is very personal … everyone is free to marry a culture and its customs and habits, but looking at the faces of these Jamaican women you will agree with me that Rastafari is Jamaica !!! And what do you think?
